Speech: A skill that enables you to be all that you wish to be
Speech has power. Words do not fade. What starts out as a sound, ends in a deed.
Abraham Joshua Heschel

Developing your speech and voice from a lifetime of habits can be unsettling. Sometimes more so for the people around you. Too often those closest to us, mock our ambitions – big or small. Anyone that intimidates you into “staying the same” is not thinking of your best interests. Speech is influenced by our parents, neighborhood environment, friends, and education. Sometimes this training is such a departure from your background that you may voice the thought that you will not be “who you really are” or that you will sound “phony”. Calm down – it’s not true. This work doesn’t change your soul, or challenge your ethics. You are still YOU! Remember you were not born with a specific speech pattern – you learned to speak by imitating sounds. Now, you are learning to imitate those same vowels and consonants so that your speech is more flexible. Good speech and voice gives you the tools to fulfill what your craft demands:
Versatility. Clarity. Naturalness. Beauty. Authority. Confidence. Darkness. Light.
A skill that enables you to represent yourself and all that you wish to be. Speech training is a connection to your innermost self and universal truths that take you and your listeners into the vast range of human emotions.”

Lenore’s Speaking Image
OPEN YOUR MOUTH
Are you a person who spares no expense on clothes, hair, skincare, exercise — only to find your "image" dissolve when you open your mouth to speak?
COMMAND ATTENTION
Executives, entertainers, broadcasters, politicians and lawyers have always worked on their speech and voice; they understand that clarity in communicating ideas and thoughts is the key element in commanding attention
CREATE IMPACT
Most people don't realize the profound impact they make with their speech. The image of attractive, successful women or men opening their mouths only to emit New Yorkese, or other regional speech sloppiness — all crush the carefully put together 'you'.
AFFECT OTHERS
Whether it's your boss, husband, wife, chairman of the board or your best friend — your speech and its inflections does affect the way others see and hear you. Are you taken seriously or do people tune out to what you're saying? The listener judges your capabilities and social stratum as much by your speech as by your physical appearance.
INSIDE — OUTSIDE
Your speech should reflect the image you want to project in your life and career. Making yourself over externally is easy — it's 'big business'! But it is temporary. It's the internal process of positive change that is the key to self-esteem and becoming the respected person you want to be.
PERMANENT POWER
Creating speech is no mystery, but a concrete, scientific process — challenging, but exciting — and disciplined and fun. The rewards are immediate. Your success in business and personal relations support your newly acquired speech skills and make them a natural part of your personality.

For American Actors and Speakers of English as a Second Language
SPEECH training is an essential tool of the actor’s craft. Beneficial too, for the public speaker or anyone whose work involves speaking with confidence. Exercises
are worked on to develop the muscles of speech resulting in clarity, authenticity, and versatility. Full range of American English sounds using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is studied to develop the actor’s sense of hearing and skill of imitation in order to avoid typecasting.
Stress, Intonation, Rhythm, Inflection and Pattern Shifts highlight the difference between sounding professional or non-professional. Assignments are given to develop the actor’s hearing thru imitation to avoid typecasting. All members of the class participate and must speak and read English.
Ms. Harris’s classwork is based on the Alice Hermes technique. Wear comfortable clothes. Actors and non-actors alike benefit from this physical training. Be prepared to be challenged and have fun!
Individual Attention.
Private Coaching Available.
Advanced Speech Barre for the Trained Actor
This workshop Is a progression for the actor that has already had some training to keep advancing forward in their development to speak and communicate unselfconsciously. The class will encourage the actor to feel stronger and comfortable with a way of speaking that elevates his talent to enable versatility, clarity, power and beauty in everyday life and professional work on stage and in film.
Continued work to re-enforce previous training of all the sounds in English and its rules towards creating a permanent technique and way of speaking in the actor’s pursuit to feel natural. Advanced diction drills, narrative prose and acting texts are used to practice.
Further development of the sense of hearing is necessary to create nuance, rhythm and tone in text and its underlying subtext to communicate truthfully from the actor to the audience. Assignments are discussed that relate to the actor’s required elevation of the spoken word as a passageway to the heart and soul.
Previous training and knowledge of English is recommended for this course.
Ms. Harris’ workbook, which is based on the technique of the late Alice Hermes, may be purchased in class.
Private instruction available.
WHAT CLIENTS ARE SAYING ABOUT LENORE

"You’re much more than just a Speech teacher Lenore, you’re so valuable..."
Yannick Soulier, Actor
Paris, France
“I have been in the training business for over 20 years, and Lenore’s brand of presentation skills training is quite unique and effective. We were looking to improve the presentation skills of our research group, who have frequent contact with clients. This presented a particular challenge, as many in the group were inexperienced in giving presentations and the group is quite international. Lenore was able to effectively deal with the many challenges presented by using her unique skills, drawn from her acting and speech abilities in getting her audience to understand how to deliver effective presentations and overcome."
Jody Rasch, MOODYS
Vice President, Training Director
“What I learned from Lenore cannot be measured or fully expressed in words. My work is in financial training, where I am often required to deliver presentations to experienced professionals over long two and three day sequences. Lenore helped me to develop those skills needed to maintain energy and effectiveness in this environment. From the most simple acts, such as proper breathing, to the more sophisticated challenges of poise, voice modulation, and convincing expression, I was able to build a portfolio of techniques for strong communication. A patient and insightful teacher, Lenore tries very hard to understand the dynamics of her students and works to elicit success through their natural abilities. The result is a confidence that comes from real proficiency.”
Abraham Goldstein, Senior Executive
Moody’s / KMV
“Lenore’s was one of the most useful courses I’ve ever taken. Lenore introduced a more complete view of how to give a compelling speech: She taught me to bring the address to life by physically and emotionally relating to the words on the page, as opposed to speaking with a mere intellectual understanding that leads to rote regurgitation and a flat delivery. In short, Lenore taught me to create a deeper connection with the words I was saying a connection that translates into an honesty that captures and retains audience members’ attention. I have been called upon to speak in various capacities. Time and again, I’ve used the techniques Lenore taught me to express my ideas with clarity, verve, and conviction. Her teaching style is constructive and clear. The strategies I learned in Lenore’s course have guided me toward becoming a more dynamic speaker."
Michelle Burford, Journalist
O, The Oprah Magazine
“You are a true master in recognizing your students’ weaknesses and deficiencies, and recommending custom-tailored remedies to correct them. I must say that I have never encountered anyone who teaches with such kind passion and love that radiates in the classroom. The lessons I learned from you certainly have transformed my dormant self into a more confident, livelier, and happier person. The only regret is that I wish that I had discovered your classes."
Mr. Jaehoon Chung, Attorney
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
“Lenore Harris’ grasp of voice and speech is amazing but her true value is her ability to teach others. I found her guidance not only helpful but also necessary while preparing for the 2008 Miss World Pageant in which I placed third. She was able to help me bring out my true voice, sound confident and articulate whether answering questions for the international press and my interviews with the judges or my final question on stage, televised for billions. With her help I was able to shed my insecurities of public speaking and present a well-composed and confident response, in a clear, strong voice with articulate language skills. I would recommend her classes in both voice and speech to anyone considering a serious career, or interested in improving themselves.”
Gabrielle Walcott
Second runner-up Miss World 2008,
Caribbean Continental Queen,
Miss Trinidad and Tobago
“As a professional woman who speaks English as a second language, I needed to work on my accent in order to improve my communication skills. I have been taking speech lessons from Lenore Harris for six months and feel that my English pronunciation has improved dramatically. I recommend her course to everyone who needs to communicate with others.”
Clarita Piepolt
Artist/Sculptor
“I was unable to take charge or communicate with my students due to my limited speaking skills, especially in the area of pronunciation. I knew that I had the training and dedication to help students in my field, which is public education. However, I grew up with limited experience in using language as a tool in communicating. Lenore gave me confidence and the articulation skills that enabled me to present myself as the authority figure my students needed. I began to feel in control -- my students sensed this -- their respect was evident when I spoke to them. Trusting my position of authority, I was able to help them to improve themselves verbally and intellectually in preparation for their entering the outside world.”
Mellouise Murdaugh, Public Educator
New York City Board of Education
“Lenore presents communication and language skills on a multi-dimensional level. For me, as a marketing and promotions consultant, it has enabled me to present concepts to clients with confidence and ease.”
Leo Preziosi, Jr., Founder
LIVE OUT LOUD (Gay Awareness)
“I am an actor from the Dominican Republic. I needed to improve my diction and voice so I took classes with Lenore Harris at The Puerto Rican Traveling Theater. I also work as the sales director for a company that provides credit card equipment; my job is basically recruiting sales personnel from around the United States. A lot of times I have to train new sales agents by phone, so it is essential that my speech is clear. Ms. Harris enabled me to feel confident when I hire and train salespeople. My biggest compliment came when friends asked me if it was my voice on my personal voice mail machine!”
Antonio Rubio, Actor and
Director of Sales: United Merchant Services
“For most of my career as an artist and writer, I have kept a safe distance from the stage. But since studying with Lenore Harris, I find myself drawn to theatrical settings and loving it. She has motivated me to think more critically about effective communication, whether I’m giving a professional talk, engaged in a writing project, or having a brief conversation with someone on the street. I have worked in class with her as well as individually, and in both settings my awareness has been raised about the expressive potential of the physical body and the incredible power of words. I now realize that the way we say something makes all the difference, and that words have colors, just as paintings do.
Ms. Harris has an uncanny ability to get into the psychic space behind what her students are saying. She uses that space to help them access their own experience to better understand what drives a dramatic action. Consequently, she brings out more authentic performances, making monologues feel as if they are coming from the soul.
Her students invariably take brave leaps in a safe and supportive environment where technique, imagination and creativity come together, sometimes in magical ways.”
Carolyn Boriss-Krimsky
Visual Artist/ Multimedia Arts Writer/Author
"As an adjunct faculty at various educational institutions I felt that professional speech training for actors could help me enhance my teaching style. I was fortunate to meet Ms. Lenore Harris, a speech instructor at HB Studio, who immediately impressed me with her passion for the subject and expertise in this area. During our subsequent one-on-one coaching sessions Ms. Harris emphasized the importance of mastering the fundamentals of the art of speech. The results of the training became evident very quickly. I had an opportunity to deliver a brief speech to a group of 30+ finance professionals, which was met with applause upon conclusion. Overall, the coaching sessions with Ms. Harris made a powerful and transformative impact on me and my teaching career."
Michael Goussev,
Financial Services NYC
"I came to see Lenore Harris as a pre-wedding gift from my fiancé, who is a lawyer. We are both from working class backgrounds but he received an education that enabled him to speak better. I was the first in my family to get a Master’s degree, yet my speech made me appear less educated. At work, my Queens accent was creating a barrier with my supervisors, holding me back from required
responsibilities such as lectures before the head doctors. Lenore opened up a world of hearing myself as others heard me."
